Evolution was a project to commission 3 pieces of community artwork funded by Creative Scotland and the Highland Culture Programme with additional local support from Isleburn, Robertson and Port Services. They were created through community consultation and participation. Evolution celebrates the unique aspects of Invergordon such as its deep-water channel, industrial landscape, and cultural diversity.
Each piece was created by a different and unique artist, each of whom spent a great deal of time in and with the local community, with visitors and with school children.
For Foundations, DUFI ate and spoke with people from a diverse range of nationalities, and even produced a book documenting their journey. The words and stories gathered round the tables of Ross-shire are central to their piece, and allow children to play on the words of their grandparents.
Channel is situated in the Natal Gardens which commemorates the lives lost in the sinking of HMS Natal. On over 200 mantelpieces throughout the area sit individual hand cast pewter pieces, mementoes of a fun-filled hands-on experience with The Mobile Foundry (TMF) who helped people to take a new look at the deep-water channel on their doorstep.
Light is central to the third piece, Bubblefield, and became the means for gathering inspiration. Working with local young people and folk from the Isobel Rhind Centre, Del Whitticase used long exposure photography to help us all to see the industrial lighting that is so prevalent in Invergordon from a new, exciting perspective.
